I started practicing with a bridge mute regularly once my daughter was born for the sake of keeping the volume down during naps, and I got so accustomed to and fond of the sound that it shaped the way I played and composed. The crunchy tone of the banjo along with the double stops on the bass create a really interesting texture that you wouldn't expect from these two instruments. The somewhat plodding feel of the A section and the way in which the form keeps unfolding brought to mind the phrase "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back," which also brought to mind the pace of political and social progress during the time in which this was written. The B section is inspired by the piano works of Satie and Debussy, both of which were on constant repeat during those times - A.G.
